When will India become a permanent member of the UNSC?

India’s minister of external affairs, D.r. Subrahmanyam Jaishankar has recently stated that “India will be a permanent member of the UNSC in the upcoming future years”.

This statement doesn’t come as a thought only but has a full-proof plan. India is the best candidate for the seat of a permanent member in the UNSC among the rest of the G4 ( Brazil, Germany, Japan) countries in the world.

The reasons are the leadership qualities of India and its “Vasudev Kutumbkam” policy, which means India sees the world as a family. India has all the qualities that are a must for a permanent seat, like

1. It has an active role as a caretaker of public health, as in the time of COVID-19 when every country was facing a crisis of vaccine shortage, India was sending vaccines to help the world.

2. India has sent a huge amount of food supplies to Afghanistan in the case of the Taliban regime, in a situation where no other country is helping Afghanistan’s people.

3. India is the fifth largest economy in the world and has a very good understanding of nations in different corners of the world. Yes, it has two exceptions countries. But never take the first step to create conflict.

4. India is a large country with a huge population. Also, among P5 members, China is the only representative of the Asian continent, so India needs to be present there for equal representation of every corner of the world.

5. India is a nuclear power country, similar to other P5 members of the UNSC. India is also an important part of nuclear export control regimes such as MTCR and the Wassenaar Arrangement, which ensure the ban on the export of nuclear-capable material.

6. India is the biggest supporter of the UNSC because it has sent the highest number of soldiers as UN Peacekeepers, around 2,00,000 soldiers in 49 peacekeeping missions since 1948. And India became the only one to deploy an “All Women Contingent” in Liberia in 2007.

7. In 1950 and 1955, permanent membership was proposed to India by the U.S.A. and U.S.S.R. But India refused the offer at that time of the Cold War, as its acceptance would increase the tension between the two superpowers and could lead to nuclear war also. To maintain world peace, India stays neutral, and that is the quality of a permanent member of the UNSC to maintain world peace.

All of these factors, along with the strong leadership qualities of India’s leaders such as Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Dr. S. Jaishankar, Nirmala Sitaraman, and many others, are reasons for India’s strong position among the world’s top five countries.

As PM Modi’s speech showed, India will be a developed country by the year 2047. PM Modi also said that this “time is not for war” in the context of the Russia-Ukraine War. This statement reflected the confidence and power of the Indian people to reach the top as world leaders and promote peace and security.

Hence, India is an important country in the world in almost every respect and should be a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council.

What would you choose if you had the right to select India as a permanent member or temporary member of the UNSC?
